Musky Fishing For The Novice
The musky is a North American game fish that is currently stocked in some form in thirty five states as well as provinces in Canada. Even though musky fishing pressure has increased over the years, there are still plenty of trophy musky in our waters. Catch and release fishing for muskies has really become popular in recent years which should increase the musky population. Many anglers now feel that a picture is just as good as a mount.
When fishing for musky it is definitely the bigger the better. Size limits over the years have increased which is a good thing that will protect the smaller fish. Good musky fishing states will usually have a minimum size limit of at least 44 inches and some go up to around 55 inches. A musky this size is generally classified as a world class fish. Certain states will even have size limits that are different for each lake.
Musky fishing takes a lot of patience and experience. Most muskies will stay in a certain range in a lake and you will only know this by continuing to fish. A good musky fisherman will have specific spots that he fishes to give the best chance of producing a good fish. This is much different than fishing for panfish which can be found throughout the lake.
Muskies will hang out near some type of structure or in weed beds. This structure provides shade and cover which is ideal for a musky because they are a low light species fish. The thicker the weeds the better and topwater baits are perfect for fishing in heavy weeds. When fishing for musky, don't worry about the size of the bait as well because the larger the sucker the better. Muskies can consume a fish nearly half the size of it's own body.
The best time to fish for muskies is shortly before it gets dark. They are a low light fish and prefer dark, overcast conditions with a little chop on the water. You will develop your own style and favorite conditions to fish for muskies with experience.

ice fishing for musky?
I am going ice fishing for muskie an northerns soon and i need to know what test line i need and what lures work best and how far on the lake do i have to be? Thank you.
I know that here in Wi. Musky season is closed thru the winter. I would use the same set-up for them that works for Northern Pike. My rigs consist of a tip-up with 20lb braided ice fishing line. I attach a large swivel snap to this line. Then I take about an 8 ft piece of 20lb monofiliment line with a loop to attach to the snap on the main line, thread on a 1/2 oz egg sinker, then tie a 20lb wire leader to the terminal end. I put a size 8 treble hook on the snap at the end of the wire leader, then hook a live large golden shiner just under the dorsal fin with one of the three hooks on the treble. I usually try to fish just off the edges of weed beds or other cover. Drop the bait in until the weight is on the bottom, then feed out about four feet more line. This keeps the minnow within a few ft of the bottom but allows it to swim fairly freely. I've pulled northern's as big as 34 inches through the ice using this rig. banjo minnow fishing?
im going to canda soon to go fishing and i have the banjo minnow set and it seemed to work so i bought the 9 inch corkscrew hoping ill catch a pike or a muskie(musky)do u have any techniques
I actually live in MN and fish in Canada frequently and have never seen anyone using a Banjo Minnow to catch Northern/Musky.
Not to say you couldn't catch them with the BM, but, I can almost guarantee you will run out of Banjo Minnow plastic bodys long before your fishing trip is over!
Most people use giant Titanium In-line spinners, HUGE Rapala Shallow Shad Raps, Giant Spinnerbaits, & huge Jigs for Musky.
The problem with Banjo for Pike?
After 1 medium-sized Pike your Banjo Minnow "body" is going to be "toast".
Expect to catch 1-2 Pike per B-Minnow. I hope your bringing 50-100+ replacement bodys?
When I go to Canada I go through bags and bags(over 100) of 4"-5" Curly-tailed Grubs and I'm fishing for Walleye & Smallmouth Bass!
In Canada, when I want to catch a Northern, it's really VERY easy. Tie on a 12LB "invisi-wire" leader and a 6" Rapala Husky Jerk in Silver. I've caught over 30 Northerns (to 42") with the same lure all day! I actually wore the hooks out!
Ya can't do that with a Banjo Minnow!
